Hi, my name is Tim Huber and I spend way too much time thinking about grills…
I described A Time to Grill as a passion project - whatever that means - but really it’s an outgrowth of a desire to justify playing with fire and food. I love to eat, I love to cook, I love to learn.
I grew up in a family that ate together and ate well, whether it was simple homemade meals, a special night out, holiday blow outs or ritual crab feasts. Fast forward to college, and I discovered that if I wanted to eat something other than cafeteria food, I needed to learn to cook. My roommates and I pooled our meager reserves and I would cook for all of us, first with my mom’s recipes, then with what I was learning from devouring the likes of Kenji López-Alt, James Peterson, Michael Pollan, Rouxbe Online Culinary classes, and many others. A stint living with my aunt and uncle during an internship led to regular lessons from my uncle on his Weber kettle. Dating my soon to be bride, led to a dramatic expansion of my tastebuds and foods I had never experienced.
Through various seasons of early marriage, early career, grad school, and our three children arriving on the scene, there have been times of more extravagant or more simple cooking, but the love of learning, exploring, and hosting have continued to grow. Pandemic boredom and my constant research led to our first wood-fired grill in 2020. Instagram followed and the first iteration of A Time to Grill was born. That led to a rekindled interest in photography and more relationships and exposure than I could ever have dreamed, and also social media exhaustion. It closed for a season and now is relaunching in this more considered and intentional form.
My wife and I live outside of Philadelphia with our three young kids. I work in nonprofits and am not a professional chef or photographer. I do this for fun and it is. Hopefully this can be an avenue for you to explore and learn more about food and fire.
